Literature 100

For this objective you'll be writing free verse poetry inspired by a plant of your choice. Chicago's Poetry Foundation describes free verse poetry as "nonrhyming lines that closely follow the rhythms of speech." Check out some examples of free verse poems to get a feel for what we're looking for.

Unlike our Micro Quests, you should commit about an hour to get this one right. Feel free to go through several revisions before posting your final draft.

Objective:

1. (Optional) If you're not familiar with free verse poetry, check out this 5 step guide from Power Poetry. You can also find examples of free verse poems from The Poetry Foundation.

2. Find your plant. Go for a walk (or look out a window) to find your subject. Choosing a specific plant to write about will make your narrative stronger.

3. (Optional) Post a photo of the plant you chose to Twitter or Instagram along with the tag #QuestScouts and #poetry.

Remember, if you post to a public Twitter or Instagram account your photo will show up on our Scout Board for other Quest Scouts to view and interact with.

4. Write a free verse poem about, or inspired by, your plant. Make sure to take the time to do your best work. Feel free to come back to it over a few days to make sure you've got it just right.

5. Post your poem in the comments below.
