Quest Scouts inspires your to squeeze the most out of life while collecting real-life, physical badges. 

Objective:

Research an endangered plant in you state.

Details:

1) Find a list of endangered plants in your state.

2) RANDOMLY choose one plant from the list to research. Spend 10+ minutes reading about the plant. Be sure to pick out three facts about the plant that you find particularly interesting.

3) In the comments below, post the state you’re in, the flower you researched, and the three facts you chose.

Objective:

Transform a basic flowerpot into something special.

Details:

1) Attain a plain, basic flower pot. For the flower pot version of a blank canvas, we think terra cotta is ideal, but you do you!

2) Upcycle your flower pot to make it something special!

Bloom - Find - 100

Objective:

Make a find* at a garden.

Details:

1) Locate a garden with a hide located at it. (You may want to kill two birds with one stone, and see if there is a hide at your “tour-worthy” garden for the Travel objective.) You may also choose a hide that is not inside the garden but requires you to walk through it.

2) Make the find!

3) Document your find with a photograph and post it on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts. Alternatively, you can also share your hide in our Facebook group.

4) Tell us about your adventure in the comments below! What geocache/letterbox did you find? (Provide GC/AQ number if relevant.) Did anything interesting happen while you were searching?

Bloom - Visit - 300

Objective:

Go on an adventure in search of wildflowers.

Details:

1) Do a bit of research to find out a) the optimal time to view wildflowers in your area and b) where to go to view the wildflowers.

2) With the above information in mind, plan a trip to view wildflowers. (This might mean you’ve got a bit of a wait until you complete this objective, but don’t rush it! We’re after a quality experience here!)

3) Go on your wildflower adventure!

4) Take photos of the wildflowers you encounter! (Not that you wouldn’t if we hadn’t told you to!) Post your photos to Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts. Alternatively, you can also share your photo in our Facebook group.

5) In the comments below, describe your adventure in search of wildflowers. Who did you go with? Where did you go? Did everything go as planned? What was the most AWESOME part of your day?

Bloom - Art - 250


Objective:

Tour an art museum or gallery and find a botanical artist that sparks your interest.

Details:

1) Head to an art museum or gallery. (In our humble opinion, as art museum would be more fun! But you do you.)

2) While there, you’re on a mission! Search the art collection for botanical themed art. Flowers should be the primary focus of the art you focus on.

3) Choose your favorite botanical artist, and spend some time with their art.

4) Answer the following four questions about the art/artist and post them in the comments below:

Where did you view the art?
What is the name of the author?
Describe what the art looks like.
What mediums does the artist use?
What message do you think the artist trying to send?
What is interesting about the artist themself and their life?

You may be able to answer these questions from the information at the gallery, or you may have to research a little further once you’ve left the gallery.

5)  Take a photo of yourself somewhere during your botanical art adventure to document your experience. Post it on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts. You can also share your experiences in our Facebook group.

Bloom - Travel - 300

Objective:

Attend a festival or parade that honors flowers.

Details:

1) Identify an upcoming festival or parade held in honor of flowers. This might take a bit of research and planning.

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival in Mount Vernon, Washington

The North Carolina Azalea Festival

The Bluebonnet Festival in Burnet, Texas

The Grand Floral Parade at the Blossomtime Festival in Michigan

The Rose Parade in Portland, Oregon

Note: Key to this objective is the community aspect. We're looking for a public event where people congregate to celebrate. Due to COVID 19, you’ll most likely need to plan for this objective to take place in 2021, or whenever your area has deemed it safe enough to congregate in large groups.

Objective:

Check out a tour-worthy public flower garden.

Details:

1) Identify a tour worthy garden that you’d like to visit.

Wait, what does “tour-worthy” mean?!? Imagine something that is likely to be listed in a travel guide. A tour-worthy garden that is somewhat of a tourist attraction. It is something big and exciting that draws patrons from far and wide. Examples include Duluth Rose Gardens in Minnesota, McKee Bontanical Gardens in Florida, or Garvan Woodland Gardens in Arkansas.

2) Visit your tour-worthy garden!

3) Take a photo while at the garden and post it on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts. Alternatively, you can also share your photo in our Facebook group.

Objective:

Make a find* inside a graveyard or mausoleum.

Details:

1) Locate a graveyard or mausoleum in which a geocache or letterbox is hidden. (Pro-tip! Do this while you work through the research objective.) You may also choose a hide that is not inside the graveyard/mausoleum but requires you to walk through it.

2) Make the find!

Things That Go Bump - DIY - 300

Objective:

Pretend you're on "Fear Factor" and push yourself to try a "gross" food you'd normally pass up.

Details:

Do you remember the show Fear Factor? It was a show about facing fears, whether that be heights, being covered in bugs, or… yep, eating gross foods. The foods on the show were so nasty I decided not to post a video above, but if you’re curious you can check it out here. (Don’t say I didn’t warn you!) Luckily, we’re not asking you to go to Fear Factor levels of gross here… unless you want to!

1) Choose a food that you have a) never eaten before because b) the thought of it grosses you out.

Have you ever tried escargot? Raw oysters? Muscles? Durian fruit? Or how about the Norwegian delicacy lutefisk? Choose whatever you want as long as it meets the criteria above.

2) Eat it!

4) In the comments below, describe your “Fear Factor” experience. What did you eat? Where did you eat it? Describe the food and the experience of eating it? Was it as bad as you expected?

 

Things That Go Bump - DIY - 300

Objective:

Face one of your fears. (Make it a big one!)

Details:

1) What is it you’re afraid of? It’s time to do some soul searching. Take some time to make a list of things that you’d like or need to do, but are afraid of. Public speaking? Skydiving? Calling that old friend you had a fight with and haven’t spoken to since? Asking for a raise? Going to an event and introducing yourself to people you don’t know? Going on the scariest roller coaster in the theme park? Spend between ten and thirty minutes really thinking about your fears and getting them on paper. (Seriously, at least 10 minutes! Set a timer if you think it will help.)

2) Choose a fear you’re ready to face. This is scary! But guess what? This is also a HUGE opportunity!!! Imagine yourself on the other side of your fear. How does it feel to have finally faced it? Choose a fear that you’ll feel proud or relieved to have accomplished.

3) Face your fear! Since everybody has a different fear, this step will look different for all of you. The gist is the same though- Do the thing you’re afraid to do.

4) Take a photo to document yourself facing your fear and post it on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts. Alternatively, you can also share your photo in our Facebook group. If facing this fear isn’t the sort of thing to photograph in the moment, take a photo after the fact to symbolize your accomplishment.

Things That Go Bump - Travel - 300


Objective:

Visit an establishment that advertises itself as, or has been rumored to be, haunted.

Details:

1) Identify an establishment that advertises itself as/is rumored to be haunted that you’d like to visit. (Google is your friend here.)

2) Visit your haunted location!

3) Take a photo while at your haunted location and post it on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts. Alternatively, you can also share your photo in our Facebook group.

4) Tell us about your experience in the comments below! Where did you go? What did you do there? Who was your location rumored to be haunted by? What do you think- was the place actually haunted? Did you pick up on any ghost vibes while there?

 

Things That Go Bump - Research - 300

Objective:

Identify an old grave marker and learn about the person it memorializes.

Details:

1) Watch The Fascinating History of Cemeteries from TedEd and How Can Historians Interpret Gravestones and Monuments from Dr Matt Neale.

2) Head to a local graveyard or cemetery. (Keep in mind that you can combine this with the find objective if you’d like, and if so you’ll want to make sure the graveyard contains a geocache or letterbox.)

3) Walk around and examine grave markers, until you find one that is particularly interesting to you. Make sure to choose a marker that is at least 50 years old. Additionally, do not choose the grave of a person you have previous knowledge about.

4) Document your trip with a photo and post it on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts. Alternatively, you can also share your photo in our Facebook group.

5) Do some research to learn about the person whose grave you chose. Dig deep here! If a simple google search doesn’t yield much, try the library or local historical archives.

Let’s say it again for emphasis! This is a research objective, meaning the primary
purpose of this objective is to inspire your to utilize your research skills. Please
put a good amount of time and effort into searching for the history of your grave.

6) In the comments below, share what you learned about your grave and the grave’s occupant. Of course, we’d like to know what you learned about the life of the person buried there. However, it may be the case that even after your extensive research, you cannot find any information directly connected to the name on your grave marker. In either instance, you should be able to make informed inferences based on the marker itself. (Remember How Can Historians Interpret Gravestones and Monuments?)

Things That Go Bump - Visit - 300

Objective:

Go to a movie theatre and watch a spooky flick.

Details:

1) Watch the movie theatre listings for a scary movie you’d like to watch. Please make sure that a) this movie is at a movie theatre (as opposed to a home viewing), and b) you find this movie legitimately scary. (Like previous objectives, do a gut check to decide whether or not the movie is scary enough.)

2) Head to the theatre and watch the movie.

3) In the comments below, tell us us about your experience. What theatre did you go to? Who did you go with? What movie did you watch? On a scale between 1 (not scared at all) and 10 (so scary you left the theatre) how scary was the the movie? Would you recommend the film to friends?

Things That Go Bump - Visit - 350

Objective:

Head through a legitimately scary haunted house.

Details:

1) Identify a haunted house you find to be legitimately scary. The “legitimately scary” part is key here!

The purpose of this quest is to put yourself in a position to be truly scared within a safe environment. So, do a gut check with yourself. Imagine the moment when it’s your turn to walk through the haunted house. Is your heart racing? Are your hands sweating? Do you want to back out? If so, you’re ready to complete this objective. If not, please up the stakes.

For this objective you’ll most likely have to plan this ahead of time and wait for your opportunity, as obviously there are more opportunities for haunted houses in October than December.

2) Don’t back out! Enter the haunted house and be sure to make it out the other side.

3) Share a victorious photo of yourself post haunted house on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts. Alternatively, you can also share your photo in our Facebook group.

Things That Go Bump - Literature - 300

Objective:

Get your heart pumping through reading a horror novel.

Details:

1) Choose a novel from the horror genre. Please make sure that this is a novel that you find to be legitimately scary. How can you tell if it’s “legitimately” scary. Think about reading it in the dark late at night. If you find that idea (at least) a bit intimidating, you’ve got the right book.

2) Check out the book from you local library, buy it at your local bookstore or get it on Amazon.

3) Read the book! (Listening to the audio version is great too!)

4) Write a short book review and post it in the comments below. Include the title, author, and elements that you liked or disliked about the book.
