H20 - Art - 300

Art300.png

Objective:

Try your hand at watercolor painting.

Details:

1) Gather your supplies. In order to start watercoloring you'll need watercolor paints, a brush, watercolor paper (this is more absorbent than drawing paper and will make for a better experience) and, of course, water.

2) Create!

We're leaving this objective wide open because watercoloring has a bit of a learning curve. If you've never watercolored before, start by making patterns. Explore what it's like to paint on wet vs. dry paper. If you're a little more advanced (or simply feeling adventurous,) you could try painting a still life, paint a skyline, or do something else entirely.

If you're feeling lost, there are a bunch of great tutorials on Youtube.

Note: The most important thing here is that you spend time with watercolors. In order to complete this objective you should spend at least an hour exploring the medium.

3) Take a photo of your favorite watercolor creation and share it on Instagram, Twitter, or in our Facebook Group. If posting to Instagram or Twitter, use the tag #QuestScouts. (As always, using a non-private account is best so we can see what you're up to!)

H20 - Find - 400

Find400.png

Objective:

Find a geocache or letterbox that can only be reached through navigating water.

Details:

1) Find a geocache or letterbox that can only be reached through navigating water.

In other words, in order to make the find you must boat or swim to the location. (Stepping over and/or wading through streams does not count.) There should be no way to retrieve the cache other than navigating water.)

2) Take a photo of your aquatic search and share it on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts. You can also share your photo in our Facebook group.

3) Tell us about your experience making the find in the comments below! If applicable, include the geocaching or Atlas Quest number of the hide as well.

Note: Yep, this objective is difficult. That is why it is worth 400 points!

*Not familiar with geocaching? Watch this video by Groundspeak, the #1 lister of geocaches! You may also find a letterbox for this objective, but we will be using geocaching terminology from here on out for the sake of word flow.

H20 - Travel - 300

Travel300.png

Objective:

Visit a waterfall.

Details:

1) Choose a waterfall to visit. Make it a good one! Keep in mind that smaller falls may be more likely to flow during later months, so you may want to plan to complete this objective during wetter months.

2) Visit the waterfall!

3) Make sure to take a photo while at the fall to document your visit.  Share your photo on Instagram, Twitter, or in our Facebook Group. If posting to Instagram or Twitter, use the tags with the tag #questscouts. (As always, using a non-private account is best so we can see what you're up to!)

4) Do your best to learn a bit about the geology of the waterfall.

Choosing a waterfall listed on geology.com's waterfall page (there are plenty to choose from) will help make learning about the waterfall's geography much easier.

Alternatively, geocachers know that choosing a waterfall connected to an earth cache will also help you learn about the fall's geology.

5) In the comments below:

a) Tell us about your experience visiting the waterfall. How was the weather? Who did you go with? Did you enjoy your experience?

b) Describe the fall. What did it look like? Was it flowing or barely a trickle?

c) Tell us what you learned about the geology of the waterfall? What type of fall was it? How was it formed? Where does its water come from?

H20 - Literature - 300

Phillip Caputo is a reporter and author who has received praise for several of his books. Above, Caputo tells a story for The Moth that may give you a taste of his style. For the H20 literature objective we'll be reading Caputo's The Voyage, which is described below.

" In the tradition of great seafaring adventures, The Voyage is an intricately plotted, superbly detailed, and gripping story of adventure and courage. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Philip Caputo has written a timeless novel about the dangerous reverberating effects of long held family secrets.

On a June morning in 1901, Cyrus Braithwaite orders his three sons to set sail from their Maine home aboard the family’s forty-six-foot schooner and not return until September. Though confused and hurt by their father’s cold-blooded actions, the three brothers soon rise to the occasion and embark on a breathtakingly perilous journey down the East Coast, headed for the Florida Keys.

Almost one hundred years later, Cyrus’s great-granddaughter Sybil sets out to uncover the events that transpired on the voyage. Her discoveries about the Braithwaite family and the America they lived in unfolds into a stunning tale of intrigue, murder, lies and deceit. " -
