Four Oh - Literature - 300

Check out the book from you local library, buy it at your local bookstore or get it on Amazon.

Four Oh - Visit - 300

Objective:

1) Locate a business that was established in the 1940's.

The nitty gritty:

A- The business, not the building, should have been established in the 194o's. Location changes are permitted.

B- Pre-1940's businesses are ok, but 1940's are preferred.

C- The business should still exist OR still maintain remnants of it's original form. (For instance, a sign w/ it's name on it.)

C- Yep! This may be a tough one and require travel. We hope it leads you on a great adventure.

2) Travel to the business and take a look around.

3) Take a photograph that marks your adventure and share it on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts.

4) Let us know about your experience in the comments below. Was it a challenge? How far did you travel? Who did you go with? What business did you visit? If possible, tell us a bit about the history of the business.

Four 0h - Art - 200

Objective:

1) Spend at least 30 minutes browsing WWII propaganda posters. Take a look at as many posters as you can, in order to recognize stylistic patterns.

Pay specific attention to:

Imagery: What is depicted in the posters? What colors are used? How many colors? Are the images simple or complex? Cartoon like or realistic?

Wording: Do the posters use short slogans or longer text? How does the text relate to the imagery? (Is it directly related, or more of a metaphor?)

2) Choose an issue you'd like to promote. The sky is the limit here. (Just keep it PG.) Save the whales! Take more vacation days! Pick up after your dog!

3) Using what you learned during your research, design a WWII style propaganda poster for your issue.

3) Tell us about your experience making your poster in the comments below. What country's propaganda style did you mimic? What did you learn for your research and incorporate into your poster? What "issue" did you decide to promote?

4) Take a picture of your finished poster and post it on Instagram or Twitter with the tags #QuestScouts and #Propaganda.

Remember, if you post to a public Instagram or Twitter account your photo will show up on our Scout Board for other Quest Scouts to enjoy and comment on.

Four Oh - DIY - 150

Objective:

1) Locate something damaged that you, or someone you know, might discard due to this damage.

2) Instead of getting rid of the object, repair it! Darn a sock, put a patch on a pair of jeans, or re-glue a cracked shelf. The possibilities are endless!

3) Tell us about your experience in repair in the comments below. What did you repair? How did it go?

4) Take a picture of your repaired object and post it on Instagram or Twitter with the tags #QuestScouts.

You could even do a before/after comparison if you're feeling especially enthusiastic!

Remember, if you post to a public Instagram or Twitter account your photo will show up on our Scout Board for other Quest Scouts to enjoy and comment on.

Remember, if you post to a public Instagram or Twitter account your photo will show up on our Scout Board for other Quest Scouts to enjoy and comment on.

Four Oh - Find - 300

Generally speaking, making finds is not about the numbers- It's about the experiences you have along the way. But what if, sometimes, the experience is in reaching a numbers goal? Let's give it a try!

Objective:

1) Make 40 finds* in a single month.

The nitty gritty:

A- A month is defined as any consecutive 31 day period.

B- For this objective, you may count finds made towards non-Four Oh find objectives towards your 40 finds.

2) Take at least one photo during your 40 finds adventure and share it on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts and #Geocaching or #Letterboxing.

If you'd like, share several photos over your month to keep us up to date on your progress.

3) When you've completed this objective, let us know about your experience in the comments below. Was it a challenge? Did you have fun? Did anything particularly great happen while out on the hunt?

*A "find/hide" can be either a geocache or letterbox. Not familiar with either? Watch this video by Groundspeak, the #1 lister of geocaches or read about letterboxing from Atlas Quest.

Four Oh - Games - 300

Objective:

1) (Optional) Watch the above video from Polygon about The History of Clue. Or should we say Cluedo? Note: Video is a bit crude at points.

2) The deduction game Clue was invented in the 1940's. Grab some friends and play this classic game, or play one of it's listed (and arguably much better) successors.

1- Clue. The classic detective game!

2- Mystery of the Abbey. A monk has been murdered? But who did it?

3- Letters from Whitechapel. One player is Jack the Ripper, the rest are potential victims!

4- Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detectives. Your are presented with a mystery and asked to solve it. Are you up for the task?

5- Alchemists. Discover secrets of alchemy! (This game is very complex, but fun once you get the hang of it!)

3) Post a photo of yourself playing your chosen deduction game on Twitter or Instagram with the tags #QuestScouts and #BoardGame.

Remember, if you post to a public Twitter or Instagram account your photo will show up on our Scout Board for other Quest Scouts to view and interact with.

Without member support Quest Scouts wouldn't exist. In order to show our appreciation for our members we provide a monthly Members Only Micro Quest worth 50 exclusive points. And if you're not a member yet, consider becoming one today!

Objective:

1) Download and print the Rockin' MOMQ puzzle, "Geological" from our member files page, or use the back of the Rockin' quest card from August's Scout Pack.

2) Read the instructions provided and complete the puzzle to the best of your ability.

3) When your time is up, post the number of words you came up with in the comments below.

Rockin' - Games - 300

Objective:

1) Gather your supplies.

You'll need:

A) A bandana. Any bandana will work, but a solid color will be best.

B) Fabric paint, puffy paint or permanent markers. (Warning: Markers may bleed.)

2) Choose a board game you'd like to replicate.

When deciding on a game, keep in mind that you'll be using rocks as pawns. You don't want anything too complicated. As many classic board games began by using rocks as pawns, you might want to go with one of those. We suggest checkers or mancala

3) Create your game!

Copy your chosen game board onto your bandana. Don't worry about perfection here! It's a difficult medium to work with.

4) Head outdoors- And of course, make sure to bring your game board. You can even wear it if you'd like!

5) Once outside, whether that's a trail, a park, or your backyard, gather your rock pawns.

6) Play your game!

7) Take a photo to document your experience. Post it on Instagram or Twitter with the tags #QuestScouts and #BandanaGame.

Remember, if you post to a public Instagram or Twitter account your photo will show up on our Scout Board for other Quest Scouts to enjoy and comment on.

Rockin' - Find - 300

It's time to up the usual tupperware game with a container that comes with it's own camouflage! Are you up for the challenge? Grab some cement (or your building material of choice) and get started!

Objective:

1) Choose an aim! There are a lot of tutorials online for making fake rock containers. Go with any set of instructions you'd like, or make it up as you go along.

Just make sure you meet to following criteria:

A) Your rock needs to be a container. This means that it has space inside to hide something in. (The size is up to you.)

B) Your rock should be synthetic! Don't simply glue a natural rock to a container and call it a day.

C) Do it yourself! This should be obvious, but don't simply buy a pre-formed fake rock.

Feel free to share promising instructions you've found in the comments below. This is the best set of instructions we've run across.

2) When you're done with your container, take a photo of it and share it on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts.

Remember, if you post to a public Instagram or Twitter account your photo will show up on our Scout Board for other Quest Scouts to enjoy and comment on.

Note: If you'd rather keep your container off the internet, you can instead post a photo of your process.

Another note: You aren't required to hide your container to complete this objective, but I hope they all become geocaches or letterboxes eventually!

Rockin' - Find - 200

"An EarthCache site is a specific geological location that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of Earth. Visitors to EarthCache sites can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage resources, and how scientists gather evidence."

-Earthcache

Objective:

1) Identify an earth cache that you can visit. If you're brand new to earth caching, head to earthcache.org and read up before you start your adventure.

2) Visit the earth cache location.

3) Gather your information. Unlike most geocaches, Earth Caches do not contain a physical container. Instead, every earth cache contains a set of questions that must be answer in order to claim your find.

Make sure to take your time and answer every question! Remember, this is a chance to learn.

4) (Optional) E-Mail the cache owner with your answers.

As some of you are not geocachers, we've decided not to require you to do this step. However, if you do want to log the cache, you'll need to do this.

5) (Optional) Log the cache!

6) Tell us about your experience in the comments below. Which cache (include the GC#) did you find? Where was it? Did you enjoy your experience?

7) Take a photo of yourself in front of the "geological point of interest" and share it on Instagram or Twitter with the tag #QuestScouts and #EarthCache.

Remember, if you post to a public Instagram or Twitter account your photo will show up on our Scout Board for other Quest Scouts to enjoy and comment on.

Rockin' - Photography - 150

"Creativity is a spark. It can be excruciating when we're rubbing two rocks together and getting nothing. And it can be intensely satisfying when the flame catches and a new idea sweeps around the world."

-Johnah Lehrer

Objective:

1) Build a rock sculpture.

Make it massive, make it small- make it however you'd like. Remember that you are building your sculpture for the purpose of creating a high quality photograph. This may effect the width, height, and location of your sculpture.

If you need some inspiration before you get started, check out Pinterest

2) Photograph your sculpture. Pay attention to the framing and perspective of the sculpture.

As this is a photography objective, your goal is not simply to document the experience, but to create a photo that is a piece of art.

3) Share your photo on Instagram or Twitter with the tags #QuestScouts and #RockSculpture.

Remember, if you post to a public Instagram or Twitter account your photo will show up on our Scout Board for other Quest Scouts to enjoy and comment on.
